Recipe: Beer Bread

I used to make beer bread all the time. Every week we were eating it. I would buy the ready made recipe and just add beer. It wasn't that I loved it, it was fine, it was just a different type of bread beside the loaves you buy at the store. Something different for a change of pace. Then, slowly, over time, I made it less and less. Also, it got rather expensive to keep buying the mix.

I don't know much about doing things from scratch, unless it is easy. I would watch my Momma cook growing up and she would know just by looking at the palm of her hand how much of the ingredients she was putting in something. She had the "infamous" roller pin and would have flour all over the counter. We were allowed to help, very minutely. Mainly though, we just stayed out of her way.

I remember she used flour, sugar, egg, butter, and salt to make bread dough, but I don't recall how much of everything as either I was too young or she didn't "measure" it out per se. I looked for a bread recipe in her books and found several but they had different ingredients than what I remembered her using, so I went to work on finding a recipe I could make at home.

Through many trial and error, many, I believe I have a good recipe for what has turned into an easy beer bread.

Some items needed are stick butter, egg, beer, self-rising flour, and sugar.

Preheat oven to 350*F and grease a loaf pan.

Mix 3 1/2 cups of self rising flour and 3 tablespoons of sugar together in a bowl. Add 1 egg and 1- 12 ounce beer to flour mixture and mix well. *I like using the apple flavored beers, however, any beer of choice would work.

Pour batter into pan and bake for 50 minutes.

Pull pan from oven, brush 1/2 a stick of melted butter over the bread, and return to the oven to cook an additional 10 minutes.
