Recipe: Turmeric Rice

This month is going to be all about spices! What they are good for and how they could be used. Each day I will give some health benefits about the spice that will be used and then a recipe to use it in. Of course, spices can have side effects and some people may even be allergic to them. Always consult a doctor with any questions, especially if taking medication.

Some people use the term Herbs and Spices interchangeably; however, they actually are obtained from two different parts of the plant. Herbs come from the leafy part of the plant, such as Basil, while spices come from the root, stem, or seed part of the plant.

According to many doctors and health sites, Turmeric has many health benefits. This spice is widely used in Asia, especially the Southeast part. The most known benefit of this spice is that it has been successful in preventing a variety of cancer strains. There is also evidence showing that the Curcumin within Turmeric can halt the advance of cancer cells or even outright destroy cancerous cells.

Some items you will need are turmeric, garlic, rice, butter, broth, salt, and pepper.

Melt 1 tablespoon of butter and add 1 tablespoon of garlic in a saucepan. Add 1 cup of rice and 1 tablespoon of turmeric and stir.

Add 1 1/2 cups of chicken broth and bring to a boil, cover, and simmer for 15-17 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in 1 additional tablespoon of butter.

Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve while hot.

Willing to try this one, usually the spices in Indian food is too heavy but this seems like a good way to begin.
