The Small Treasure's of Life

Hi everyone! I've been absent for a few days. I have been around working on some past posts and updating them, just not current in new posts for y'all and I'm back. My gallbladder has forsaken me, ha! So, I've been going to the doctor's and setting up appointments to move things along. This is something I think many people can relate to as it is very common, as I've been told. I know many people who have had the surgery and all have been grateful to have it removed, so that makes me feel better. Let me know, in the comments section, any tips or tricks you have to get through this process. If you've been through it, it's easy. If you haven't, it's scary, especially for someone who hasn't had a big surgery, yikes!

This pipe of today is so special and near and dear to my heart. It means the world to me that I am able to share it with everyone. It has been in the family for at least my lifetime and was recently passed on to me by the man himself, my Father, or Dad as I like to call him (or Daddy if I'm in trouble or need help, haha! I'm Southern y'all!). The pouch still had the old tobacco in it when I received it and the smell still lingers. To hold all three pieces together elicited tears of yesteryear.

I remember this sitting on my Dad's bureau on the top right side. Each time I would go in to dust the room's, I would pause at the pipe and smell the tobacco. By then, he was smoking Captain Black in the black package with the big ship on the front. I would always say that when looking at the tobacco pouch that would sit behind the pipe stand. "The black package with the big ship on the front"; who knew it would be one of the iconic items of pipe smokers today?

I love the fact that the Dr. Grabow brand was created around the time of my father's birth. It seems fitting that the pipes that bear Dr. Grabow's name became one of the most popular, and one of the most well-known, pipe brands in North America. I like to think of my Father as being larger than life, also, so the pairing goes hand in hand with me πŸ˜ƒ.

Dr. Paul E. Grabow was a general physician in Chicago and Mr. Linkman was the owner of M. Linkman & Co., a large pipe factory. During one of their evening get-togethers in 1930, Linkman mentioned he would introduce a new type of pipe soon and was still looking for a good name and believed his pipes would sell better if they bore the name of a physician. Dr. Grabow graciously said yes to use his name and the rest is history, as they say.

It was a very common use to name pipes "Doctor X's" throughout the 1920's and 1930's worldwide. Uncounted "systems" and filter types were invented suggesting to smoke not only mild-mannered but even more in a sophisticated healthy way.

The length of this pipe is 5.0" and the height is 1.44". The weight is 0.8 oz and the outside diameter is 1.13". It is astonishing to me that this pipe seems small in comparison to what I remember. My dad has big Dad hands and this pipe always looked perfect in his hands. I remember it being this great pipe my Dad had and how awesome the texture was and how he would relax with it. It is a great blessed honor to have this in my collection and one that will be cherished along with the memories.

We go through so much material every week (you have no idea) that if there's nothing new on a blog or site we don't even think about it, but this is one of the few sites where if I haven't seen anything for a little while my radar perks up and I have to go check it out to make sure we didn't miss anything. Just love this blog. You're doing it right.
